Hydrated sodium calcium magnesium alumino-silicate, less than 10% w/w; CAS number 1302-78-9. Approximately 2 – 5% w/w total quartz; CAS number 14808-60-7
Characteristics: Beige to tan coloured rain disintegrable granules. Odourless.
Decomposition Temp: When heated to 800º C liberates carbon dioxide yielding a reactive alkaline powder that reacts exothermically with water.
Melting point: 1,500º C.
Specific Gravity: 2.70 g/cm3
HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION
Health Effects: Swallowed: Product is essentially non-toxic. Ingestion of a substantial quantity could lead to irritation or physical obstruction of the gastro intestinal system.
Eye: May cause irritation of cornea, burning, itching and redness to the eye.
Skin: Repeated or prolonged exposure may dry out the skin and cause irritation.
Inhaled: Irritation of the lungs, coughing or choking may occur. Chronic effects: For prolonged or repeated exposure exceeding the occupational Exposure limits IARC lists respirable crystalline silica as a lung disease hazard. Overexposure may cause silicosis, cancer, bronchitis, or emphysema. The dolomite powder from which this granular product was manufactured contains less than 0.1% respirable silica.
MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEET
First Aid:
Swallowed: Give small quantities of water only if the patient is not losing consciousness and not convulsing. If gastric disturbance occurs call a doctor.
Eye: Flush with a gentle stream of clean water for 15 minutes. If irritation persists see a doctor.
Skin: Wash off with soap and water.
Inhaled: Remove the patient from the affected area to an area of clean air. If coughing or other symptoms do not subside see a doctor.
PRECAUTIONS FOR USE
Exposure Limits (TWA): 10mg/m3 inspirable dust as calcium carbonate. 0.2mg/m3 respirable dust as quartz.
Ventilation: Dust control or extraction to meet exposure limits.
Personal Protection: Wear NIOSH/MSHA approved dust mask, eye protection and skin protection.
Flammability: Non flammable
SAFE HANDLING INFORMATION
Storage and Transportation: Store in a dry well ventilated environment under cover. Not regulated for transport.
Spills and Disposal: Wear a dust mask and sweep up. The granules comprise natural mineral products so can be buried safely.
Fire/Explosion hazard: Not applicable.
Other Information: While not flammable the product may decompose as a result of being heated in a fire to produce calcium and magnesium oxides which will react with water to give a caustic solution.
